Police Assaults Unemployed Graduate demonstration

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on October 10, 2007

Unconcious protester assisted by WPC’s

After nearly one day’s havoc police used tear gas to end up the road blockade organized by unemployed “Tharuna Aruna” graduates. I look at this scenario with mixed feelings. My initial reaction was anger. I was directly affected by this ‘demonstration’ and had to walk to pettah from WTC (thats not a big deal… after all that was a good change..)…

However i saw thousands of people were affected by the guerrilla demonstration of these graduates. As i have commented i dont like to see the youth of country being manipulated and fooled by the politicians. However these folks could have become smarter. They blocked the Colombo Fort causing inconvenience to the general public who have paid their education by the means of tax.

I know the hardships of graduates. Most of them are from rural areas and they complete the university degree with high hopes of a fruitful future. Instead of the promised future their lives become more and more difficult. It’s these hard life conditions force them to violate the law and order of the country. These youths have taken a great risk. Since police has obtained a court order regarding this they had no escape.

I think that Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa should take some action to solve this problem. It’s People’s alliance who gave jobs to the large number of unemployed graduates ignoring the prevailing economic problems. I think government shuld have some responsibility , however government is NOT the only respondent to this problem. The private sector should also look in to these problem.

Campus Poetry

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on August 31, 2007

Dear Friends,

I visited UOM (University of Moratuwa) recently for a Leo club meeting. During the meeting i happened to encounter with some interesting lines of poetry composed by university undergraduates. On a literary point of view these poems are very simple , yet i consider them as powerful expressions of emotions.

Today people kill each other for simple things. For instance a boy would kill a girl because the girl did’nt loved him back. One might argue that young generation is full of emotions and it’s natural for them to behave like this. However youths should be able to channel their destructive energy to other paths , to constructive ones. Rather than being involved in ragging and other anti social activities , university students could unleash their energy towards sports or arts. That’s happening at University of Moratuwa , not at other universities.

The visits to UOM help me to recall the happy days of university life where we had unlimited freedom. University to work transition was somewhat like from freedom to boredom .. 🙂 (Joke)

Have a look at the poems written by future engineers

Sarasaviya

See the bond between the writer and university.. they consider the university to be a safe heaven where they have independence.

Love

University Violence – Once Again!!

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on June 27, 2007

Came to know that Arts students and Science faculty students have clashed and the UCSC buildings and vehicles of lecturers were damaged. A coworker of mine , an undergraduate of Science faculty informed this to me.

What a shame !!! Fighting just because a bunch of guys hooted a couple ….!!!

In the history university students fought… but for worthy causes… they fought for the rights of university students , and on broader issues which had an impact on the whole country!! Today they fight like thugs for trivial causes.

I wonder what sort of reaction the university authorities would take…. I believe that such tomfoolery should be dealt seriously. The people who damage public property should be prosecuted , be they university students or LTTE !

University students themselves complain about the deteriorating quality of the government university degree. It’s not the so called “Upadhi Kada” (Private Universities) to be blamed , but your own selves!. Through idiotic acts like this they tarnish their own image.

These comments does not apply to students of University of Moratuwa , who have continued to maintain true professionalism for several decades.

Graduate Problem , Public Service and Attitude

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on June 12, 2007

A Minister has told that most of the graduates in the public service are not doing a  service worth to their salary. According to him they are just idling ..[Read the Story]

While Minister Maitripala is accusing these graduates on one side , the graduates are also demanding for “better salaries” and “positions suitable for their degree”. SLFP government provided some solution to the so called ‘graduate problem’ by absorbing them to the government service. It is questionable whether these graduates received proper training.

In my opinion the biggest issue is the ‘opinion’ of the graduates. Even after receiving their degree they think that government should ‘spoon feed’ them by providing them jobs. The popular slogan “Apata Rakiya Diyaw” is the best example for this. In my opinion most of the graduates are suffering from an inferior complexity. Due to this complexity they are hesitant to enter in to private sector which requires English proficiency and soft skills.

The “parrot” type class earners wont be able to perform at the private sector which is much more practical and pragmatic. Therefore the only available solution is entering government service. According to this article the graduates have become a liability rather than an asset.

“The Minister also said that some of them report to duty only on Wednesdays although the public office authorities have informed the government that all are efficiently employed.”

I think that a  true paradigm shift is necessary to change this situation. The education should be more practical. On the other hand the graduates should also try to cure the dependency syndrome and their inferiority complex.

Sri Lanka university non-academics strike work

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on June 5, 2007

Monday, June 4, 2007, 15:18 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka university non-academic workers went on a token strike today accusing the authorities for taking revenge from the workers who led the settled strike two weeks ago.

The Convener of the Inter University Joint Committee of Trade Unions said that the Colombo University authorities have suspended work of nine non-academic staff workers and eight workers of the Sripali Campus in Horana have been transferred to the Colombo University. He said the union is leading the strike to urge the authorities to stop the trade union suppression and to revoke the circular to deduct the number of days they struck work from their own leaves or to consider them as no pay leave.

Meanwhile the Colombo University non-academic staff commenced a continuous strike from today urging to revoke the suspension of nine non-academic staff workers.

However, a Colombo University administrator said that the workers were suspended as they damaged public property and behaved unruly during the strike.

===============================================================

Huh … These guys are on strike again !! Wonder when will we get our examination results. As an insider i think that government and the workers both have to take the responsibility. Now they are striking saying that they shouldnt be deducted money for the period they were not working… How ethical is that ! On the other hand government would have fulfilled the pledge to increase their salaries.

However i cant agree with the damage to property and violent acts. The Non ACAD staff of UOC should be thankful that they have the freedom of protesting in a High Security Zone…and that they are not in the JR regime where they suppressed strikes and trade union action using ‘bicycle chain’.

All strikes have one thing in common. The common man is always crushed. If doctors strike poor people dependent on govt hospitals will be affected. If CTB strikes the poor middle class travelling in the busses will be affected. The uni strikes affect the students …the middle class and poorest students who strive to complete their studies.

I appriciate the brave stance of VC. Nobody shouldnt be allowed to violate law and order.  However it seems that we will have to wait for an aeon to collect the degree certificate from the university. Long Live the Strikers !

Last Day @ University

Posted by sadeepa palliyaguru on February 16, 2007

I wrote for the Politics of Middle east paper on January and it is the last day of My Univeristy life in an official sense. We could not have any sort of celebrations on that day cos most of our friends were on study leave. However We , Shanuka , Raz , Priyanwada and My self had a chat on that day. Here are some of the crazy shots taken there. Shanuka imitates being a politician , however i am sure he would some day be a real politician (Joking Mr ‘Bones’)
The two girls were shy to pose for photos. Think that they are inherited from “Prince Diana” who is extremly shy to pose for photos.

We spoke of the “God” and his blind “followers” and our future job options. The meeting was a funny one but had a very serious discussion with my friend shanuka.
I will also introduce some of my other univeristy friends. (Most of them were not there .. will show them to you on another day.

Meet Nethmini , who is doing an Econ special. Cool friend , studious. Took this near the OLB where we had our exams.

So University exams are over !! No more “mug up and repeat” … But i will miss the fun uni life for sure!
